It has been an eclectic week in Gan Ramat Gan. We learned more about ourselves both in English and in Hebrew. Ms. Alexander read a beautiful book for us. "The Skin You Live In" "With the ease and simplicity of a nursery rhyme, this lively story delivers an important message of social acceptance to young readers. Themes associated with child development and social harmony, such as friendship, acceptance, self-esteem, and diversity are promoted in simple and straightforward prose. Vivid illustrations of children's activities for all cultures, such as swimming in the ocean, hugging, catching butterflies, and eating birthday cake are also provided. This delightful picture-book offers a wonderful venue through which parents and teachers can discuss important social concepts with their children." We had a very busy week in Gan Ramat Gan. We started our second unit: All About Me both in English and in Hebrew. Our English explorations have focused on our five senses. On Monday during small groups we used our feeling vocabulary words to create our own "feeling hands". On Tuesday we explored our sense of smell. Ms. Alexander used our mystery box to hide what it was we were smelling and then after our discussion we created smelling paintings based of how each paint that was mixed with a different smell, made us feel when we smelled it. On Thursday, we used our sense of hearing to create noise shakers and after guessing what was making each sound, we described how depending on the material used the sound could be louder versus softer. Finally, on Friday we used our taste buds to identify different foods and describe if they were: sweet, sour, salty, bitter,... I We learned and practiced the following Hebrew words: rosh - head einayim - eyes oznayim - ears pe - mouth af - nose We prepared our self-portraits after looking into a mirror and described ourselves in Hebrew. We played with the magic box and drew our new and old vocabulary words and pronounced them. We also played with Mrs. Potato and reconstructed her face pronouncing Hebrew words. The greatest attractions of the week were our new Hospital at the Dramatic Play Center and the Veterinary Clinic at the Science Center. Our state-of-the-art equipment , stethoscopes, otoscopes and X-Ray machine, is very popular during center time. The hospital has three minor patients (dolls; buba-doll) and we also treat each other enthusiastically. The Veterinary Clinic is operating with a wide variety of clients including: pil - elephant panda - panda kof - monkey zebra - zebra dubon or dubi - bear dag - fish Song of the Week Yesh li Yesh li shte yadayim (I have , I have two hands they are clapped One Two., They go up , they go down, they do circles and they disappear) At the end of the song we put our hands behind our back. Please play the video for your child at home. Moments of the Week: This week Ms. Emily' s Kimochi session was about being "silly". We identified situations when it is okay or not okay to be silly. Then, everybody shared an example of a time when they were silly. We would love to continue this discussion at home, so please ask us. At Ms. Alexander's English groups, we drew letters from the mouth of an alligator. We also traced our hands on black construction paper. We practiced ABAB patterns and Hebrew with Ms. Anna. Our pattern games included all words we learned by now. An example of an ABAB pattern is: 1,2,1,2. We made these patterns using a variety of images that we already know in Hebrew, such as keshet (rainbow), and anan (cloud). We placed the pictures, continued the pattern and pronounced the words in Hebrew. We also quantified different objects in the afternoons , counting to 10 both in English and Hebrew. We celebrated Kassidi's and Drew's 4th birthday. Thank you Kassidi's grandma for the balloons and Kassie's brother, Kobi for being Mystery Reader. Mazal Tov Drew and Kassie! Song of the Week: Ruach, Ruach ruach - wind tapuach -apple translation of the lyrics: Wind, wind, wind, wind, In the orchards fell an apple Fell an apple from top of the tree Fell and shattered We love this song. Please play it for us at home. Moments of the Week: Hebrew Morning Meetings started with an Israeli greeting song: Shalom lachem We spoke about the weather , the days of the week and the date. (Click on the links to practice the words) We also jumped and counted the days in Hebrew. We also sang our favorite songs and Ms. Anna read us our favorite stories in Hebrew. On Thursday we opened Gan Ramat Gan's Sensory Center: the Sand Table "Why Play in Sand? There is no right way to use sand. It invites participation; it permits children to make and test hypotheses; it stretches the imagination; it provides a potentially soothing sensory experience; and it is an excellent avenue for children to learn physical, cognitive, and social skills." You can read more about the benefits of sand play here. We used a timer and made sure that everyone in class had opportunity to play at the Sand Table. Thursday afternoon, our first Mystery Reader visited us. Jonah's and Row's mom read us several books and we enjoyed listening the stories. Thank you Haleigh for reading for us! Some of our friends started Ballet in the afternoons in the Obama Room. In Gan Ramat Gan we love to dance. This is one of our favorite dances, play it for us at home. Moments of the Week:
