Shalom!שלום This is how we prepared for the big day: We made our suitcases (mizvada) and packed them with clothes. We packed our passports, boarding cards and flags for the trip as well. We arrived to the airport early in the morning, where we had check in and security. We followed the procedure in Hebrew. We boarded the plain at 8:40. After a small snack and safety video , we landed in Israel. We visited the Galilee , the Hermon, Jerusalem and Tel - Aviv. See our adventures below. Shalom!שלום We continued to learn more about food in Hebrew. Played bingo and memory game with food items. We prepared our own plates from a Hebrew Menu. We learned a new song about an apple (tapuach) which fell off the tree in the wind. Listen to the song and try to sing along. ruach ruach ruach - wind wind wind pardes - orchard naphal - fell mi-rosh haetz -from the top of the tree Greetings Gan Ramat Gan Families!! Last week on the English side of things, the children have continued working on Fundations (Letter recognition & letter sounds), and of course math skills(counting, number recognition). We have also focused a lot of attention on our store...which will named: The “Gan Ramat Corner grocery store”. As our unit is focused on Food, the children are and will be learning about the different food groups, where food comes from, the five senses, what foods should be represented on their plates during meal times, and some of their own favorite foods. One of my questions last week asked them to tell me what their favorite foods were...and here are they’re own answers. 1. Andre - pizza (with onions on it) 2. Breakfast (pancakes, eggs, bacon) 3. Ari - spaghetti 4. Max - French fries 5. Isabel- beef, mashed potatoes, corn 6. Maddie - pizza (cheese), Popeyes 7. Prashant - pizza 8. Dylan - pizza 9. Nathanael - Apples, and chick-fil-a 10. Leah - McDonalds 11. Ava - pizza 12. Collin - pizza and Mac & cheese 13. Molly - pancakes 14. Malicah - chicken nuggets 15. Valentina - pizza and broccoli 16. Joelle - spaghetti noodles, grout, and pie 17. Ms. Cindy- Seafood 18. Ms. Anna - Quinoa with vegetables I’m not sure if these are true facts, as you would know more about their favorite foods, but they enjoyed coming up with these and watching me write it up on the dry erase board... very happy and proud. Next week we will continue to add to our grocery store(need more purses, ads and wallets), and create math and writing activities that revolve around food. Until next time... Ms. Cindy Moments of the Week Slideshow: Shalom!שלום We started our new unit in Hebrew about food.
Please watch the story below and practice the fruit vocabulary. On Friday we went on a Field Trip to the National Gallery of Art. I prepared a scavenger hunt and we tried to follow the following route. Click on our plan here. We started with Leonardo da Vinci's Ginevra, stopped in gallery 50 to see Dutch still live paintings with food and flowers, walked to the East Building, enjoyed escalators and a huge elevator, visited Calder's animals and arrived to the huge blue rooster on the terrace. See our adventures in the Moment of the Week slideshow below. Picture Day sneak preview and other great moments of the week. Shalom!שלום This week we read the book about Ayelet who is going on a walk and meets different animals. She places the animals in her pocket, on her shoes, on her head.... It was a great book to practice clothing and body vocabulary words. Watch the video and listen to the story below. In addition we learned words of the animals. Chipushit - ladybug Tzipor - bird Chilazon - klavlav (kelev) - doggy kis - pocket kis hasimla - pocket of the dress tzav - turtle giraf -giraffe On Friday, we exhibited our books about Datya Ben-Dor's rhymes and poems. During the exhibition we also screened the video about us reading from our books. We are going to send home the books before spring break. Ask us to read rhymes and poems in Hebrew at home. Click here to see the film. Greetings and Salutations once again Gan Ramat Gan Families!
Over the last few weeks on the English side of things we have been continuing to create awesome space projects. They have played with space slime, made mini telescopes, and of course finished up the jar nebulas. They have had an absolute blast with this unit! They enjoyed all of the books that we have read on the subject but their favorite was, “8 Spinning Planets”. Their favorite song from this unit has been, “Zoom Zoom Zoom We’re going to the moon”. On Monday if you look at the dry erase board you can see which planet your child chose to live on if they didn’t live on Earth, which was pretty cool. I have loved every moment of teaching the children this unit! Okay...one last thing about the planets, well Pluto in particular! They have learned that Pluto is not a planet because it has too many neighbors. To be a planet you have to be round, and have your own space(no neighbors). Pluto is round, but has way too many neighbors, hence the downgrade to a dwarf planet. It’s in our solar system, but is not considered one of our planets. During Math and reading small groups, the class has been been working on letter recognition, sound recognition, and beginning word knowledge. The last one is based on how well they are doing with the first two, if they can not identify that many letters, we are working on just that the identification portion(and name recognition). They have also been doing rainbow names, which is basically getting them familiar with recognizing the letters in their name and then learning to write it by tracing over each letter with different color markers(hence creating rainbow names). During math we used a lot of block building materials, number counting games, and floor puzzles (problem solving). Your children have done a wonderful job working together in a large group and in small groups. FYI, on Wednesday all space projects will go home, so that’s the: Moon dioramas, Jar nebula’s, and the mini telescopes. So please either take them with you Wednesday morning, or upon pick up in the evening that day. Until next time... Ms. Cindy Shalom!שלום This week we focused on short Hebrew conversations. First the teacher asked us questions and we answered later we tried to ask each other. Ma shlomech? (f) - How are you? Ma shlomcha? (m) - How are you? Tov - Good Lo tov - Not good Kacha-kacha - So-so Ma at loveshet? (f) - What are you wearing? Ma ata lovesh? (m) - What are you wearing? We continued to edit our Datia Ben-Dor books and practiced the following words: Clothing Colors We watched the following childrens' program about clothing. This is a great way to practice colors. Watch the video below: We also played many games in Hebrew. One of our favorite games is Hiding Clothes behind our back. We close our eyes and Ms. Anna hid clothing items when we open our eyes and find the items behind our backs, we need to identify them in Hebrew and place them to the matching picture in the middle of the circle.
We enjoyed outdoor play this week. We have a new blackboard outside so we could draw and write with chalk during recess. Greetings and Salutations Gan Ramat Gan Families!! Last week on the English side of things the children continued to focus on alphabet and sound recognition through Fundations. As usual I try and change up the way I do Fundations in order to make it fresh and exciting for the class. One new way is to have them close their eyes, randomly pick a letter from the bag, and shout...”Surprise!”, and then tell me what letter they picked, along with the sound and a word that began with that letter. We have also continued to work on our Space unit, which they are really enjoying. I’m quite sure our Saturday field trip to the Air and Space museum helped your child grasp the concept a little better, and the planetarium show...”The stars Tonight”, was an awesome learning experience as well. It wasn’t the Sesame Street show that we thought we would see...but generally they still enjoyed it! Also during the week, we finished up our moon dioramas, and started on our jar nebulas. We are making these using small jars with lids, fine glitter, cotton balls, acrylic paint, and water. They are having a blast with this project. I have six more students to finish up next week, and then we will start on our next activity revolving around our solar system. During center time they are playing with my space and astronaut table toys, and during math we used the astronauts with the counting strips. During small group(math and center) time we have used the paper rocket letter/sound, and counting matching sets. They have only used them once, since we’ve had to finish up and then begin time consuming activities. Next week however, we will utilize these rocket sets a lot more(Thanks Ms. Sam!). So far during this unit, your children have: made and played with moon sand, created their own constellations, made a moon diorama, made a tube rocket, and started on their jar nebulas. Let’s see what’s next shall we? Until next time... Ms. Cindy Shalom!שלום This week we continued to practice the words and sentences of the Clothing Unit.. As part of our celebration of Women's History Month, Mr. Townsend invited us to create a project featuring women who have made contributions to society. We chose Datia Ben Dor, who is an Israeli writer, we read many of her books and listened to her songs this year. We were working on our own books by editing Datia's rhymes and stories. In case you missed the Saturday Air and Space event and the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden picnic, here is the link for a short Hebrew Treasure Hunt in the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden. Find the sculptures and answer the questions in Hebrew. Shalom!שלום This week we read, watched and listened to the story of Giveret Shir (Ms. Song) several times. Giveret Shir has 3 hats, 3 shirts and 3 skirt in her wardrobe. She has to find out in what combination she wears her clothes to be different every day.. We practiced the following words and sentences: Ma hi loveshet? - What is she wearing.? Hi loveset - She wears.... chulza - shirt kova- hat chazait - skirt kahol - blue adom - red tzahov-yellow Watch the story below in two versions. The second one is told by the author: Datya Ben Dor We also played a new game which helped us memorizing the words and practice number recognition in Hebrew. We attached vocabulary cards to bowling puppets, rolled the ball ,collected the puppets which fell on the floor. Recognized both the clothing objects and the numbers. Then we placed the puppets on a corresponding number in the row. Greetings Gan Ramat Gan Families!! Last week the children continued their lessons on space exploration! They are really enjoying every part of this lesson, and I can’t wait to continue to teach this fun and educational science unit. So, last week they helped to make moon sand at one of the tables using flour and baby oil, and then I transferred it to the larger sensory table. They took turns throughout the week (2 at a time) playing at the table using cups, and spoons. I showed them how to make sand domes and castles by packing the sand down into the cups and turning them over. They had a blast! We also started on our moon dioramas as well. They first glued rocks (moon rocks) to the bottom of the box, the next day the painted the entire inside of the box a bluish gray, and added two astronauts, and on Monday we will finish up the dioarama, and start on the next project. Also when you arrive on Monday check out the library area, I made a little planetarium (have to add a few things). I think they will love it!! Last week week we also reviewed our letter recognition and sound, as well as number recognition and sound. Our read-a-louds were mostly related to space with a few exceptions, like pancakes, pancakes, and a few others. It was a very good week! So until next time... Ms. Cindy Shalom!שלום We continued to play games with clothes and we created our own wardrobe.. Every morning we describe what we are wearing (michnasayim -pants, simla- dress, hatzait - skirt, chulza - shirt). We created a new board game with pictures of clothes. We use a dice , count in Hebrew and try to reach the sweater with the snowman (sweder im ish sheleg) Our new Hebrew greating game has three options: At/a rotza/rotze (Do you want)
Greetings Gan Ramat Gan families! On the English side of things last week, the children enjoyed their second week of learning about our solar system, and they are having an absolute blast with this unit. I am also having a blast teaching this unit! They are learning little tidbits of information on each planet, as well as our closest star, the sun. I have introduced some new solar system songs, shared some videos of real astronauts at the space station doing everyday things, and watched a space shuttle take off, and then land. I read about seven different space books that Ms. Sam picked up from the library, and they played with my toy astronauts, rockets, space shuttles, and satellites during either center time or math time (mostly during math). They are loving every bit of this unit! We are also continuing to work on letter and sound recognition, rhyming words, counting, and putting quantities to numbers. The activity of the week was to create their very own rockets using paper towel tubes, the cone shaped paper cups, tissue paper and the paint sticks. This week we will be working on constellations, asteroids, and nebulas. Below are items that we need.
